A loud Air Purifier is a waste of money! Let’s talk about Sound Versus Noise.

No one likes a noisy and distracting air purifier. There is nothing more irritating than a constant drumming or buzzing sound in the background. It can be disturbing, intrusive, and distracting. So, if you are planning to run an air purifier regularly, noise is something you surely want to consider. However, even though most air purifiers do make sounds, the sound is not to be confused with noise. They might be used interchangeably, but they certainly are not the same thing. There is a huge difference between something that emits a sound that is easy to disregard and is not annoying and a noisy appliance that can not be ignored.

What Is the Difference Between Noise and Sound?
To put it very simply, the sound is simply what we hear. It is essentially a vibration that emits an acoustic wave, which is then received by our ears and interpreted by our brains. Noise is specifically an unwanted sound that is interpreted by the hearer as being unpleasant or loud. Perhaps it is best to conceptualize it as noise pollution – an excess of unwanted sounds. So, it is important to note that some sounds are not perceived as being unpleasant, while noise, by definition, is unpleasant. But what determines what we perceive as sound versus noise?

Understanding Decibels
To have a better understanding of the differences between something that just emits a sound and something noisy, it is best to understand how sound is measured. On a scientific level, noise and sound are technically the same things. But in our day-to-day lives, they are very different.

Noise typically refers to sounds that have a high decibel level, which can be extremely distracting and jarring to listen to. A decibel is a fairly well-known unit of measurement, as it is the most common way of determining levels of sound. Decibels are a logarithmic unit, and there are certain ranges of decibels that will practically go unnoticed, while others are considered dangerous.

Fireworks, for example, max out the decibel scale at a whopping 140 to 160 decibels, and a jet engine measures in at around the 130-decibel range. This level of sound would certainly be considered noisy, as it is so loud and disruptive that it can even be physically painful to listen to. Loud city traffic comes in around 70 decibels, which is still considered by the majority of people to be “noise.” It would certainly be distracting to have a busy intersection right outside your bedroom window.

On the opposite end of the scale are quieter sounds which are almost undetectable and very easy to ignore. For example, the sound of breathing is very low, just 10 decibels, and the hum of a refrigerator is 40 decibels. Generally speaking, sounds above 85 decibels are considered harmful and can cause hearing impairment with regular exposure. Sounds below 70 decibels are considered safe.

The Filtr Revolution has a superior design when it comes to sound reduction.

By oversizing the blower, Filtr can run at a slower speed to reduce noise at the same airflow rates compared to mass-produced competitors. The innovation of sandwiching the blower between our prefilter and HEPA filter not only offers you the safest air possible, but also uses our own parts to absorb its own noise.

Mass-produced filtration units will often attempt to solve the problem by offering a “night-mode” feature that they claim reduces noise. In fact it may, however it’s always at the expense of clean air delivery meaning in reality they trade comfort for quality, meaning you’re actually less protected while you sleep. Filtr gives you the best of both worlds by offer night mode sound with day mode protection.

The Filtr Revolution
In the quest to deliver the highest performing, but quietest air purifiers, Engineers at Filtr Revolution have answered the call. Balancing the most clean air a unit can deliver with an operating sound that is the least distracting means you’ll run Filtr Revolution more often at a higher flow rates therefore keeping yourself and those around you continually safer from airborne particles and pathogens.
The goal of Filtr Revolution is for us to effectively clean the air and for you to forget that it’s even running.
